The Mount Maunganui Base Track, also known as Te Ara Tūtanga, is a scenic 3.4 km loop that wraps around the base of Mauao, the volcanic cone at the tip of Mount Maunganui. This walk provides stunning coastal views over Pacific waves, Tauranga Harbour, and Matakana Island, as well as lush native pōhutukawa trees lining parts of the path. The trail feels peaceful and open, offering a gentle way to experience Mauao’s natural and cultural beauty, without the effort of climbing to the summit.

The base track takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. The pathway is mostly light gravel and wide enough to accommodate walkers, runners, and pushchairs. There are public toilets at both ends of the track and a water fountain located near the surf lifesaving club. Dogs are not permitted on the base track. There are no rubbish bins along the path, so visitors are encouraged to take their waste with them.
On a hot or sunny day, make sure to bring water, sun protection, and a hat many parts of the track are exposed. Some sections are close to cliff edges, so stay alert for uneven or rocky ground. The walk is relatively easy, but it can get busy, especially on weekends or when cruise ships are in port, so be ready to share the path. Carry any litter with you, as there are no rubbish bins on the trail.
You can access the base track from either end: one entry is near Pilot Bay, the other is close to Mount Maunganui Beach near the surf lifesaving club. If you’re arriving by car, there are parking areas nearby, though they can fill up quickly during peak times. Walking from Mount Maunganui village or using local buses is also convenient. Signage along the walk clearly guides you around the loop.
Early morning or late afternoon are ideal times to walk the base track you’ll avoid the midday sun and crowds, and the light makes the coastal views especially beautiful. Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends. Partial track closures may occur occasionally for maintenance, so checking with local authorities before your walk is wise.
