Jardin Botanique de Neuchatel

The Jardin Botanique de Neuchâtel is a serene and beautifully landscaped 8‑hectare botanical garden tucked into the Vallon de l’Ermitage, on the heights above Neuchâtel. It offers a mix of themed botanical collections, natural habitats, and woodland areas. About 2,500–3,000 plant species are represented, including alpine flora, medicinal plants, and exotic species in its greenhouses. There’s a renovated Alpinum showcasing mountain plants from European regions, a medicinal garden (“jardin des simples”), and a unique “Kaléidoscope” sensory trail, where you can experience nature through all five senses. The site also includes ponds, a stream, and wild corners, making it both educational and peaceful.

Warum diese Tour buchen

The botanical garden is both a relaxed green space and a center of scientific and conservation work. It has a mission to preserve biodiversity, manage plant collections, and support environmental education, so some paths are designed carefully to protect delicate habitats. As the garden features varied terrain — including meadows, rocky areas, and woodland  comfortable shoes are recommended. The sensory “Kaléidoscope” trail is well-suited for all ages, but parents should supervise children there. While the outdoor areas are freely accessible, for guided tours or certain exhibitions (e.g. in the greenhouses), booking ahead is wise, especially for larger groups.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

From Neuchâtel’s train station, you can walk to the botanical garden in about 15 minutes by following paths up into the Vallon de l’Ermitage. The route takes you through charming old town streets and green trails. Alternatively, you can take a local bus that stops near the garden entrance. There is some parking available around the garden's entrance for those arriving by car, though spaces are limited, so it’s best to come early.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The garden is open year‑round, but visiting between March and October gives you the longest hours for the greenhouses and exhibition spaces. During summer days, the light in the garden is particularly lovely for walks and for enjoying the sensory trail. In winter, when the sun sets earlier, start your visit in the early afternoon to make the most of the shorter opening times. Weekdays, especially in the morning, tend to be quieter perfect for a peaceful stroll or immersive nature experience.
