The castle complex includes outdoor terraces, historic halls, and museum rooms. Elevators and pathways make parts of it accessible, though some areas involve stairs. A ticket usually includes entry to the courtyard, the Pharmacy Museum, and a funicular ride to reach the palace level. Several viewpoints and photo spots are scattered throughout the grounds, offering great angles of the Old Bridge and the city rooftops.

Wear sturdy shoes—there are cobblestones, uneven steps, and sloped walkways. The inner rooms may have limited heating in colder months, so dress appropriately. Guided tours are available in multiple languages. Buying tickets in advance is recommended, especially during summer and weekends. Expect moderate crowds, particularly in the afternoon. Don’t forget to bring a camera—the panorama from the balcony is one of Germany’s most photographed views.

From Heidelberg’s Old Town, you can reach the castle by taking the Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt station—it drops you right at the entrance. Walking is also possible, but the hillside path is fairly steep. Local buses run close to the Old Town, and taxis or rideshares can take you to the lower funicular station.
