Arkas Maritime History Center

Opened in 2012, the Arkas Maritime History Center occupies an elegant mansion that once served as a private family residence in Bornova. The museum’s collection includes more than one hundred meticulously crafted ship models, numerous maritime antiques, and paintings that celebrate the history of navigation and seafaring. The exhibition spreads across several rooms and floors, allowing guests to follow a timeline of maritime evolution from sailboats to modern vessels. Admission is either free or modestly priced, and most visitors spend about an hour exploring the well-curated displays.

The museum is set inside a restored historic building, so expect some stairways and uneven flooring. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Photography is generally permitted, but flash use may be restricted in certain rooms to protect the exhibits. The building is quiet and atmospheric—ideal for visitors who enjoy slower, reflective sightseeing. Facilities such as cafés and souvenir shops are limited nearby, so plan your refreshments before or after your visit in central Bornova or at one of its local cafés.

From central İzmir whether you’re staying in Konak, Alsancak, or the seafront area head toward Bornova district. The museum is located on 80th Street in the Erzene neighborhood. It can be reached by taxi, car, or public transport; buses and the metro to Bornova provide easy connections, followed by a short walk. If you are driving, there is usually street parking near the museum. Allow 20–30 minutes travel time from central İzmir, depending on traffic.
