Saint Polycarp Church

Located in the Konak district of İzmir, the church sits near the intersection of Akdeniz Mahallesi, Gazi Osman Paşa Boulevard, Necatibey Boulevard and Kazım Dirik Street. The building dates from 1625 with significant restorations over the centuries—after a fire and other damage in the late 17th and 18th centuries and was expanded into its current shape with three aisles and elaborated chapels during the late 19th century. As a working Catholic church, it remains open for worship but also welcomes visitors who wish to appreciate its historical architecture and interior artwork.

When visiting Saint Polycarp Church, keep in mind it is both a historic landmark and a living place of worship. Dress modestly cover your shoulders and knees and be respectful of any ongoing services. The interior lighting can be soft and the space calm, so talk quietly and avoid disturbing others. From central İzmir such as the Kordon waterfront, Konak Square or Alsancak you can reach the church easily by public transport or on foot. Take the tram or bus to Konak or nearby stops, then walk into the Hisarönü / Kemeraltı district until you reach the intersection around the church. Taxis and ride‑shares are also straightforward. If you’re driving, look for parking near the central Konak area and then proceed on foot some lanes near the historic district are pedestrian‑friendly but narrower for vehicles.
