Historical Elevator

The Historical Elevator is a charming and practical landmark in the Karataş quarter of İzmir, built in 1907 to overcome a steep 50–60 metre height difference between two streets. It connects Mithatpaşa Street at the waterfront with Şehit Nihatbey Street above. Inside the tall tower you’ll find twin lift cabins that carry visitors from the lower level to a panoramic terrace at the top. The view from the upper platform spans the city’s rooftops, the bay and the glittering sea-horizon, offering one of İzmir’s most memorable vantage points. The neighbourhood around the elevator is lively, with cafés and narrow lanes that invite a slow stroll.

Alles über Historical Elevator

Was Sie erwartet

Located in the Konak district of İzmir, the Historical Elevator was built by businessman Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu in 1907. The brick and stone tower has four vertical sections and features decorative motifs from its era. Originally the two lift cabins were water-driven and later modernised. Today the elevator is publicly accessible, free to use, and serves as both a functional connection and a tourist viewpoint. The street leading to the tower has been renamed after singer Darío Moreno, and the area forms part of İzmir’s historic urban fabric, blending cultural heritage with everyday city life.

Warum diese Tour buchen

When visiting the Historical Elevator, remember a few practical notes: Although the lift ride is short, you’ll move from the lower district to the upper terrace so there are steps and level changes outside the lift cabin. Wear comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding lanes. The viewing terrace may be subject to café clientele or crowds at sunset, so plan your timing accordingly if you want a quiet moment. The neighbourhood is safe but busy, so keep an eye on personal items. Access is free but food or drinks at the café can cost more than typical local spots. Bring a jacket or layer if visiting in cooler weather—the breeze near the terrace can be stronger than expected.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

From key spots in İzmir like Konak Square or the waterfront, walk or take public transport toward Karataş or Dario Moreno Street. The elevator is about a 10-15 minute walk from Konak if you depart from the coastal promenade. Tram or metro stops at Konak or Çankaya will bring you within reach, from where you ascend into the historic quarter on foot. If driving or taking a taxi, head to the address on Şehit Nihatbey Street near Dario Moreno Street; parking in this dense area can be limited. Once you arrive, look for the brick elevator tower rising above the stone houses and follow signs or ask a local for “Asansör”.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon. Morning visits mean fewer people and quieter streets; late afternoon offers the most dramatic light on the city and bay, especially at sunset from the terrace. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) bring pleasant weather for walking the surrounding district. Summer midday can be hot on the stone paths; winter evenings are atmospheric but daylight ends earlier, so plan accordingly. Allocating about 30-45 minutes to ride the elevator, enjoy the view, and wander the street is sensible. If you intend a longer exploration of the area, allow up to an hour.
