Gaziemir Underground City

The Gaziemir Underground City is a fascinating subterranean site located in the village of Gaziemir, in the Güzelyurt district of Aksaray Province, part of greater Cappadocia. Unlike many underground cities that focus exclusively on shelter and defense, Gaziemir stands out because it appears to have been built for accommodation and trade as well as protection. It features spacious underground halls, church remains, a winery, storage rooms, stables, and corridors wide enough for camels. Excavations revealed that the underground space includes features from the Byzantine era and later caravanserai use, offering a rare glimpse into how trade, travel and settlement converged beneath the surface of Anatolia.

Alles über Gaziemir Underground City

Was Sie erwartet

Gaziemir is located approximately 40‑55 km from the centre of Aksaray city and roughly 50 km or more from the central Cappadocia towns (depending on your base). It was officially opened to the public in 2007 after clearing debris and mud from earlier floods. The structure includes a 10‑metre long entrance hall built with an overlapping stone technique (which echoes Hittite masonry styles) leading into an open courtyard and underground chambers. Two churches, a large wine‑making facility, living quarters and animal stables are all part of the site. Because of its unique character, Gaziemir is described as the only known underground caravansarai in the world – effectively an ancient underground stop‑over for travellers and animals, not purely a wartime shelter.

Warum diese Tour buchen

Visiting Gaziemir requires some practical awareness. The underground passages and chambers are more open and less cramped than some other underground cities, but there are still uneven floor surfaces and some low‑ceiling sections. Wear good walking shoes and bring a light jacket in cooler seasons—underground can feel damp and cool. Visitor amenities are modest: don’t expect full tourist infrastructure or large cafés right at the entrance. Also note that museum cards may not always be valid here, so check access fees in advance. Because the site is off the main tourist circuit, you’ll likely enjoy a quieter visit, but signage may be minimal and local guide help can enhance your experience.

Die richtige Tour auswählen

From a base in central Cappadocia (such as Göreme, Ürgüp or Uçhisar), you’ll drive toward Aksaray city and then on to the Güzelyurt district, finally arriving at the village of Gaziemir. It’s about 40 km from Aksaray, depending on your route. Driving or hiring a taxi is the easiest option, since direct public transport to the site is limited. Once in Gaziemir village you’ll find signs to the underground city entrance in the village square. Allow extra time for rural roads and small village lanes. If you prefer a guided day‑tour from Cappadocia that includes Gaziemir (and perhaps other remote sites) that can also be arranged through local operators.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The site is accessible year‑round, but timing your visit will enhance comfort and experience. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are ideal with mild temperatures. Summer may be hot above ground, but underground spaces remain cooler and more inviting. In winter the ride may be chillier and daylight shorter. Visiting earlier in the day means fewer other visitors and more peaceful exploration; aim for morning if possible. Plan around 30‑60 minutes to explore the underground city itself; if you want to linger, photograph details or combine with nearby sites, allow a half‑day.
