Aziz Mahmut Hudayi Mosque

The Aziz Mahmut Hudayi Mosque is located at Aziz Mahmut Efendi Sokağı No:1, Üsküdar, Istanbul (postcode 34672) and forms part of a larger historic complex. Originally, the complex included a soup kitchen, library, tomb, the sheikh’s residence, and dervish rooms, spanning approximately 10,000 m². It was built around 1594 under the patronage of Ayşe Hanım Sultan, daughter of Mihrimah Sultan, and Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha. The mosque’s architecture is modest yet rich in Ottoman and Sufi symbolism, featuring a rectangular plan with a wooden roof and decorative elements added over subsequent centuries. Today, it serves as a place of worship, spiritual reflection, and cultural visits. Non‑Muslim visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, provided they wear respectful attire.

When visiting the Aziz Mahmut Hudayi Mosque, it is important to dress modestly: as with most mosques in Turkey, shoulders and knees should be covered, and women may be asked to cover their heads. Visitors should remove their shoes before entering the main prayer hall. The mosque is closed to tourists during the five daily prayers, so plan your visit outside these times for a calm and peaceful experience. Photography is generally permitted in the courtyard and around the exterior, while discretion is advised inside the prayer hall—avoid using flash during sermons. The tomb of Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyi is located in a respectful zone, so maintain a quiet demeanor and refrain from loud conversations. To reach the Aziz Mahmut Hüdâyi Mosque, visitors can take a ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar. From the Üsküdar ferry terminal, it is a 10–15‑minute uphill walk to the mosque. Alternatively, you can use the Marmaray metro line to Üsküdar station and then walk or take a short dolmuş (shared minibus) ride to the Aziz Mahmut Hüdâyi neighborhood.
