Hoa Lo Prison (Maison Centrale)

Hoa Lo Prison, also called Maison Centrale, is one of Hanoi’s most powerful historical sites. Built by the French in the late 19th century, it was originally used to imprison Vietnamese revolutionaries. Later, during the Vietnam War, it held American POWs, including John McCain. Today, it's a museum showing both its colonial past and wartime use. With preserved prison cells, exhibits, and detailed storytelling, the site gives visitors a deep and emotional insight into Vietnam's history.

Wissenswertes vor der Abreise

The best time to visit is in the morning or early afternoon, especially on weekdays when the museum is quieter. Since it's indoors, it’s a good option if you're looking for something to do during Hanoi’s rainy season or midday heat. Visiting earlier in the day leaves time to enjoy other nearby attractions, or attend an evening performance at the Hanoi Opera House after a meaningful visit to the museum.
