The Perfume Pagoda (Chùa Hương) is one of northern Vietnam’s most sacred sites, nestled among dramatic limestone mountains and lush riverside scenery. This complex of Buddhist temples and shrines is set deep in the Huong Tich Mountains, with the main pagoda built inside a cave. A trip here combines spiritual exploration with stunning nature—perfect for travelers wanting a peaceful retreat from Hanoi’s urban energy.

Guided Tours
Located about 60 km southwest of Hanoi, the Perfume Pagoda is not a single temple but a vast complex of religious sites. The main highlight is Huong Tich Cave, reachable by boat and then a steep walk or cable car. Entrance fees range from 80,000 to 100,000 VND, plus additional costs for the boat (around 50,000–100,000 VND) and cable car (optional, 140,000 VND round trip). Bring cash, as cards are rarely accepted in this area.
The visit involves a fair amount of walking, including steep steps if you skip the cable car, so wear comfortable shoes. The boat ride is scenic but sun-exposed—bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. While it’s a religious site, casual tourist clothing is accepted, but modest dress (covering shoulders and knees) is respectful. Most vendors and boatmen speak little English, so consider a guided tour for easier navigation.
To reach the Perfume Pagoda from Hanoi, most travelers join a day tour, which includes transportation, lunch, boat ride, and entrance fees. DIY travelers can take a bus or taxi to My Duc District, then head to Ben Duc Pier for the boat ride. The trip from Hanoi takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Ride-hailing apps like Grab work in Hanoi but may not be reliable in the rural areas near the pagoda.
The Perfume Pagoda is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from January to April, during the Perfume Pagoda Festival—Vietnam’s largest religious pilgrimage. While the atmosphere is vibrant then, it’s also extremely crowded. For a quieter experience, visit in the early morning on a weekday outside festival season. Avoid rainy days, as paths can become slippery and the boat ride less pleasant.
