Milford Sound

Milford Sound is located in Fiordland, on New Zealand's South Island. Despite its remote location, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The fjord is about 15 kilometers long, with some parts reaching depths of up to 420 meters. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, including the famous Mitre Peak, it’s often shrouded in mist, adding to the mystical atmosphere. Additionally, while there are no accommodations in Milford Sound itself, there are options in nearby Te Anau, where most day-trippers begin their journey. Be prepared for limited amenities on-site, but rest assured the natural beauty more than makes up for it.

The easiest way to reach Milford Sound from Te Anau is by car or coach. The drive from Te Anau takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, with a picturesque route that winds through mountain passes and lush valleys. The road to Milford Sound, known as the Milford Road, is scenic and offers stunning views along the way, including the famous Homer Tunnel and the iconic Mirror Lakes. If you prefer not to drive, you can join a guided coach tour, which often includes scenic stops along the route. For those with limited time, helicopter tours are also available, providing a unique aerial view of the fjord and surrounding mountains.
