Great Theatre of Pompeii

The Great Theatre of Pompeii is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, with a history dating back to the late Republic period. Its design reflects the Roman adaptation of Greek theater styles, with a large orchestra area, raised stage, and tiered seating that surrounds the performance area. Visitors can walk through the massive structure and imagine the lively performances that once took place here. Although the stage is now in ruins, the theater’s design and acoustics remain remarkable. It also has a smaller companion theater, the Small Theatre, located nearby, which was used for smaller performances and musical events.

The Great Theatre is located within the Pompeii Archaeological Park, easily accessible from the Porta Marina entrance. Wear comfortable walking shoes as the terrain can be uneven, and bring sun protection, especially during the summer months. The site can get crowded, so visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon is recommended for a more relaxed experience. You can enjoy the theater’s acoustics by clapping or speaking softly to hear the remarkable echo effect. Audio guides or guided tours provide detailed historical information about the theater and its role in Pompeian society.

The Great Theatre is located within the Pompeii Archaeological Park, making it easy to access once you're inside the park. If you're traveling from Naples or Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station, which is only a short walk to the entrance. Once inside the park, the Great Theatre is just a short walk from the entrance, located near the Forum. If you're on a guided tour, transportation is usually included.
