Deir el-Medina, also known as the Valley of the Artisans, offers a unique glimpse into the daily lives of the workers who built the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. This ancient village was home to the skilled craftsmen and their families, and it’s one of the best-preserved settlements from ancient Egypt. Visitors can explore the workers' houses, small temples, and beautifully decorated tombs, such as those of Sennedjem and Pashedu. Deir el-Medina is located on the West Bank of Luxor, approximately 5 kilometers from the Valley of the Kings. It’s open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the entrance fee is around 100 Egyptian Pounds for adults and 50 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the site or combined with entry to nearby attractions. Plan to spend about 1–2 hours exploring.
Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, as there is little shade at the site. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the terrain is uneven. Photography is permitted, but flash is usually prohibited inside the tombs. The site is relatively compact, making it an excellent choice for those with limited time or mobility. Guided tours can add depth to your visit by explaining the significance of the site’s artifacts and art.
The easiest way to reach Deir el-Medina is by taxi or as part of a guided West Bank tour. You can also cycle from the Nile’s West Bank ferry landing if you're feeling adventurous. Guided tours often include transport, making them a hassle-free option for visitors.
Visit early in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, especially during the high season (November to February). Mid-morning or late afternoon visits are also pleasant, though the site is less busy than more famous West Bank attractions like the Valley of the Kings.
